“Gold!” celebrates the 16 athletes of 1996 U.S. Women’s Soccer Team who won the Gold Medal at the inaugural games.
The gold medal game was played in Athens, Georgia, at Sanford Stadium on the campus of my alma mater, the University of Georgia. The perfect July evening erupted in jubilant celebration filling the campus and the town. What a thrill to share the extraordinary win – especially with my mother who never quite understood her daughter’s enthusiasm for all things sports: cleats, bats, rackets, ball gloves, and therefore: bruises, blisters, shin splints, and sprains.
Woman’s Groundbreaking Accomplishment
In 1996, 16 American athletes won the first Olympic Gold medal awarded to a Women’s Soccer/Football Team. I took my mother to that game.
