Artist Statement
I was inspired to make this art quilt by Maya Lin and her design for “The Wall”, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. I constructed my quilt in several panels to represent the panels that make up The Wall. I utilized hand dyed and over-painted fabrics to create two paper-pieced panels which represent her trend toward minimalism and abstraction.
The third (middle) panel is made up of three panel images of pictures that I have taken at the Wall during my various visits. The Panels are separated by bias constructed from hand dyed silk ribbon (purple) and satin ribbon (bronze). The purple ribbon represents the many Purple Heart medals that have been left at The Wall and the bronze ribbon represents the Bronze Start medals that have been left there as well.
