Artist Statement
My quilt of Indira Gandhi has mainly been constructed using a collage method I learnt in a Susan Carlson class. Facial features were then enhanced using machine embroidery, paint and pencils. The background fabric was created using Ricky Tims’Convergence method and the lower pink panel quilted using a paisley and temple pattern. The sari itself is made from a paisley patterned shawl I purchased in Fiji a few years ago.
Indira Gandhi was a figure I knew from my childhood through to adulthood with little knowledge of her life and achievements. Despite some setbacks and mistakes along the way, she achieved many successes and achievements for her country.
Woman’s Groundbreaking Accomplishment
Indira Gandhi was the first female Indian Prime Minister and to date the only one.
