Artist Statement
I have always believed that creative arts feed the soul. They are the sustenance from which we derive the strength to make our ordinary lives extraordinary. They are the outlet for our creativity and in some cases the balm for our inner pain and struggle. Creating quilts has sustained me through both difficult and joyful times.
This is one of those joyful times as this particular quilt represents one of my favorite women of history, “Coco” Chanel. I wanted to keep the design as sleek, simple, and timeless as one of her “Little Black Dresses” (LBDs). I give a nod to a number of her trademarks, including her fragrance, Chanel No. 5, her classic handbags, the hounds tooth check, and the little chain which adorns the inside of every one of her suit jackets.
Woman’s Groundbreaking Accomplishment
“Coco” Chanel freed women from corsets, created the most successful perfume in history, popularized the Little Black Dress (LBD) and was an accomplished businesswoman.
