Artist Statement

I chose Dolly Parton as a woman to celebrate because she has accomplished so much in her life with such a unique style. From very humble beginnings in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains to becoming an international superstar, she has succeeded every step of the way with an immense natural talent and a shrewd mind for business. She is the most honored female country music performer of all time. Dolly is a singer, song writer, actress, author, businesswoman and humanitarian.

When it came time to give back, she took a good look at the needs of her hometown and created a literacy program for pre-school children. Inspired by the fact her father never learned to read, she created the Imagination Library to focus on getting books in the hands of children before they started school. Each month, an age appropriate book arrives in the mail. The family can encourage and foster the love of reading before the child attends school. Today that program has expanded to 4 countries and, in 2015 alone, gave out over ten million books to over nine hundred thousand children.

Dolly Parton has entertained the public for decades, always searching out new audiences and making new fans along the way with an image that often contrasts with her humble humor and a talent that cannot be denied.
